September 8, 2012
|Bristol - Chris Joseph Gamber, 72, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with lung disease.
Born in New Haven, CT on Sept. 26, 1939, he was the son the late Dorothy & Harold Gamber. He is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 46 years, Alice Gamber of Bristol, CT, his siblings John Gamber of Southington, Maryann McSheffery of West Haven, Paul Gamber of Meriden, Harold Gamber of VA, and was predeceased by a brother Thomas Gamber of Hamden. He leaves behind his adoring children - Chris Gamber Jr. and wife Rachel of Bristol, daughter Kimberly LaPorte and husband Christopher of Southington, and daughter Elaine Bogdanski and husband Craig of Southington.
He spent many weekends enjoying his five grandsons play sports, watching with a quiet pride. Christopher Gamber of Bristol, Logan & Shane LaPorte of Southington, and Connor & Ryan Bogdanski of Southington will miss their grandpa dearly.
He attended grade schools in West Haven, CT, served in the U.S. Army National Guard, and attended New Haven Technical College. His career as an engineer offered him travel to many places, and residence in Florida and Rhode Island before settling in Connecticut. He retired in 1992 after 33 successful years with IBM.
Chris’ passion was for the special place he created for his family in Sebago Lake, ME, and his children continue to share this gift with their families. Chris was blessed to spend this last summer at the lake with them boating, dining and taking in ball games. When not at the lake, Chris and Alice spent all of their time together doing their favorite things - such as home improvement projects and traveling to other favorite vacation spots including Sarasota, FL. Although they will miss him dearly, they are eternally grateful for the amazing gifts he has passed along, such as his uncanny ability to fix anything and his easy, genuine sense of humor.
The Gamber family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his loving caretakers at the Hospital of Central CT Bradley Campus ICU, the Southington Care Center, and the Hospital for Special Care. Chris was blessed to be under the loving care of his son-in-law, Dr. Craig Bogdanski, whose courageous treatment enabled him enjoy the highest possible quality of life this summer with his family and friends.
Through all the sweetness in his life, he knew what God had made him;
For in the final days of summer, surrounded by his family and the presence of the Lord;
He set out to find his future, the one he'd always known;
He didn't want to leave his family, but he knew the Lord had called him home;
'Cause he was the rock, he was the one we ran to;
And when he said the words forever, we knew that it was true;
He wasn't a saint, he is the one the saints bow to, receiving a man… a man of his word.
The Funeral will be on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St., Southington. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be on Friday, Sept. 14 from 5-8 pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in his memory to the Recreation Program of the Southington ARC at 201 West Main St Plantsville, CT 06479.
