Olive Kiely

July 30, 1931 - February 25, 2010

Biography

Olive (Ziegler) Kiely died peacefully on Thursday, February 25 at Wolcott View Manor.
Born in Waterbury on July 30,1931, she was the daughter of the late William and Olive (O'Hearn) Ziegler. She was predeceased by her brothers William and Robert, and by her former husband John J. Kiely. Olive attended Notre Dame Academy and Waterbury Catholic High School. She graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel College in White Plains, New York and then began her lengthy teaching career. Olive taught at many schools in Waterbury, both public and private, but the longest (and she would say best) period was spent at North End Middle School. Olive spent the ten years since her retirement teaching in Title One programs to help remediate students. She loved teaching and reading, she loved kids and she loved a "turn of a phrase". Her sense of humor was sharp! Olive was a force of nature; once you met her you'd never forget her....and she would not forget you! She loved the beach and spent many happy summers enjoying the shore with her family. Whenever you visit the ocean, toss in a pebble and make a wish for her.

Olive is survived by her children and their spouses; Marita and Robert Rosen of Massachusetts, John and Debby Kiely of Wolcott, with whom she made her home, Kathryn and Eric Spunt of Massachusetts, James Kiely of California and Kevin Kiely of Rhode Island. She is also survived by the grandchildren she loved dearly; Elizabeth Rosen, Shane, Aidan and Morgan Kiely, and Sydney Spunt.

Olive and her family appreciated the loving care provided to her by the Waterbury VNA Hope Team, especially Gina Brown, and the Leever Center. She also became quite fond of the staff of the Radiology Department at Waterbury Hospital. And just where would we be without the gracious consults we all enjoyed at the Bunker Hill Pharmacy. Everyone involved in Olive's care was spectacular. Olive loved, and was very grateful to the friends who sat with her, listened to her, drove her, and loved her back.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Monday, March 1, at 10am at Our Lady of Loreto Church, 635 Bunker Hill Avenue, Waterbury ,CT . Visiting hours will be on Sunday, February 28, from 2 to 6pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 690 Woodtick Road, Wolcott, CT. Interment will be in the spring at the convenience of the family. If you'd like, donations can be made in Olive's name to the Waterbury VNA, the Waterbury Hospital Radiology Department, the Leever Cancer Center or a charity of your choosing. Also, you could just buy a scratch ticket and ask Olive for luck!
